Day 1
AM Arrive in the UK, transfer from airport to accommodation by
private coach
PM Orientation session with Anglo Educational Services staff
PM- ½ day guided walking tour of Architectural and Historical London
Upon arrival in London you will be met by your private motor coach which will transport you to your accommodation. As check-in is not normally until 3pm arrangements will have been made with the hotel for you to leave your luggage in a secure area. A pack containing any pre-purchased travelcards, plus directional maps, will have been left for the group leader upon arrival.
An orientation session will be held for you at the Anglo Educational Services Study Centre, Monticello House, in conjunction with AES staff. This session will cover health and safety, how to use public transport as well as offering you helpful hints for your stay.
After your orientation session you will meet your accredited guide for a 2 hour walking tour of London. During this time you will learn about not only the history of London but also the architecture, and how particular buildings have been constructed in order to make them environmentally friendly.
Day 2
AM Visit to the Science Museum
PM Overview Lecture on British Life and Culture with a focus on The Environment and Sustainability
This morning you will make your way to the Science Museum. This world famous institution house a wide range of exhibits. Your visit will focus on the Energy Hall and The Atmosphere Gallery which is a fresh and exciting way to make sense of the climate – the science of how it works, what it’s doing now and what it might do next. Your visit will help put into context your afternoon lecture on British Life and Culture. Your lecturer, an academic from a local university, will offer an overview
seminar with a particular focus on the environment and sustainability.
Day 3
AM Visit to The John Lewis Partnership
PM Visit to London21 Network
The John Lewis Partnership is considered by the UK Government to be the most socially responsible retailer. Your visit to one of their stores will include a guided tour with a focus on the work that they do towards protecting the environment.
In the afternoon after your visit to the Partnership you will have the opportunity to meet with a representative from an organisation such as London21 Network. London21 Network promotes, supports and networks community-based initiatives for a greener, healthier and more sustainable London. Your meeting will cover their work with businesses and the community and will enable you to see the work that London as a city is putting into sustainability.
Day 4
AM Visit to the Thames Barrier with guided tour
PM Visit to the Natural History Museum
Beginning your day in East London at the Thames Barrier you will today visit the Information at the Barrier. First of all the group will have a guided tour of the Information Centre. The talk will cover topics such as the history of the River Thames and the risk of flooding in London, as well as describing the environment and wildlife of the river. You will have the opportunity to explore the area and see how the barrier plays a vital role in protecting London from flooding.
Once you have left the barrier you will make your way to the other side of town where you will visit the Natural History Museum. Your independent visit will incorporate galleries such as ecology, today and tomorrow (impact of humans on the earth), The Wildlife garden, and Restless surface.
Day 5
AM Visit with a representative from the London Sustainability Exchange
PM Visit to the Faraday Museum
This morning you will meet with a representative from an organisation such as the London Sustainability Exchange. The LSx provide organisations and networks of individuals with the motivation, knowledge, and connections they need to put sustainability into practice.
Following this you will visit the Faraday Museum, located at the Royal Institution where you will partake in a self-guided visit
Day 6
AM Visit to BedZed
PM Free afternoon
BedZed is the UK’s first ever eco-community. It is located just outside of London so you will be travelling via train. The development is designed to use only energy from renewable sources generated on site and is a fascinating example of sustainable living. You will tour the visitors centre which charts the construction of the development. After visiting BedZed you will return to London and have free time to explore before your departure in the morning.
Day 7
AM transfer from accommodations to airport
This morning you will be transported to the airport via private coach for your flight home. We hope you have had a safe trip and look forward to welcoming you to London again one day.
